From the telegraph to the text message, electronic communication allows for a speaker to reach an audience that they are not necessarily making physical contact with. With this in mind, conversations are able to occur through the use of electronic devices that would not be feasible in their absence. Using the examples of satellite and cellular phone technologies, I argue that the role of technology in the rhetorical situation is expansion- to create the opportunity for a situation that would not occur otherwise.
